    Assignment: Discover and list 10 leading fashion blogs and write a brief critique of them, like, dislike, style etc. What works, what doesn't. Post items to tumblr and follow classmates.

  2. Topic: Blogging and Blogospheres

    Demo: Register a domain name for class blog and map it to a service service, setting up initial users

    Lecture: Blogs and Blogospheres - understanding the connections

    Assignment: Write a proposal for a your aspect blog that will include, topics, format, if you want to use a psudonim or real name etc. 

     

  3. Topic: Fashion Blogs

    Demo: registering a domain name and mapping it to blog service getting class set up as authors on the blog

    Lecture: Case Study and discussion of two fashion blogs TBA

    Assignment: Create a blog post on the 180fashion.com blog in the style that you want to create. Make sure to add a title, some text in the body, link to a related blog story, at least 2 tags, and put it in at least one category. 

     

  4. Topic: Graphics, Writing, Linking

    Demo: Finding and preparing images for blog posts

    Lecture: Creative Commons Licencing, mixing, remixing, attribution, netiquette

    Assignment: Create two blog posts that include photo essays

     

  5. Topic: Creating Valuable Content

    Lecture: Interviews, breaking news, synthisis

    Assignment: Create a blog post that is either based on an interview, or is a synthisis of several other blog posts from influencial authors

     

  6. Topic: Influence

    Demo: Doing some background checks on leading fashion blogs using some freely avalable tools

    Lecture: Building influence and social capital

    Guest Speaker: TBA

    Assignment: Write profiles on your top 5 bloggers and explain how and why they are influencial and what is their sphere of influence

     

  7. Topic: Talking To Influencers

    Demo: good pitch bad pitch

    Assignment: Each pick 3 influencers and pitch them either a story that we have published or the story behind our class blog. Comment on 3 different blog posts

     
  8. Topic: Keeping up with everyone and everything

    Demo: RSS readers and aggrigators

    Lecture: case study of aggrigation sites TBA

    discussion: review comments on blog posts

    Assignments: Write two blog posts

     

  9. Topic: Social Networks

    Lecture: Review some social networks: Characterizing different social networks, social networking, social production etc.

    Assignment: Demonstrate some ways you have integrated the group blog into some social networks you are part of

    Assignment: write a blog post on the importance of authenticity and transparency

This is for a course on social media that I will be teaching at the Academy of Art University this fall. Apart from learning about social media and becoming social media literate I hope the course can provide hands on, practical tools to help students leverage social media in the future.
